Was really refreshing to see these pictures, the past is a great help to the future and these are simple yet sentimental pictures. They look really old, but I am sure that the history of many people is attached to it. For people who have visited Thailand like me, the culture, life and situation there seems so different from what it is now. A real refreshing moment for my grand father who spent some time over there. Nice and nostalgic he says.
Nothing keeps us going the way history does. Looking at this one I remember the time people dressed up, sat prim and proper to click a “photograph”. It was more like a ritual and in comparison today, it is more like a way of life. People click picture on the go, as a result of camera phones and the dawn of digital photography, it has become so easy. Thailand has it seems changed a lot since the times these pictures were killed to the days that are today.
I am a history student and have taken world history as my major, there has been a lot of talk about various realities that existed in Thailand, during, post and pre World War II. What was just a cardboard and imagined world to me, now with these pictures that you have put up seems more real and true. Thanks for this. I am a person who more wants to see rather than read about realities that exist. So in that matter, this has helped me a lot.
Old photos of group of people of some religion or places motivates me to do research on their religion or research about places. Your pictures about old Thailand has inspired me get more information about Thailand. Also planning to visit some of the heritage places in Thailand. Thailand has got beautiful traditions which are interesting to experience. I got to know from your post that Thailand’s Mananat Wholesale Market came into existence in 1938.
I just love black and white pictures and I must say that these pictures are really brilliant and historic. They tell a tale of Thailand as it was during the period between the wars. I think a lot is spoken about the European countries, the USA and the African and Asian countries on the verge of getting independence but countries that had little going on at that time tend to be forgotten. It is great that you found these pictures and then uploaded them here. Looking at them was very insightful for me.

Two of the pictures here are posed the group pictures and the family picture. Whenever I see old pictures like this with people looking at the camera, there is always an expectation in their eyes. The camera is viewed by them as something with an unknown, almost mystic power and that is translated in the way they view it. The natural pictures are beautiful and a testament to action in the frames. Great collection.
I am a big fan of Thailand and have read a lot about it. I am still a student and have heard about it in history. When I start working I will most definitely book a trip to the Trident of Asia. Thanks for these pictures they have helped me as I am building a mental picture, almost like a perception of Thailand. I am not sure how close or far, my mental picture is from the reality there, but it makes me more and more eager for the day I can visit it to dawn.
“Trident Of Asia” ?
Not exactly sure what you mean by this ?
Never came across such unique collection of pictures of Thailand anywhere. I have been to Thailand, and after looking at your post it seems Thailand has definitely changed over time. The change is in a positive way. But one place where I have been in Bangkok which I don’t think has much changed. It is the Mananat wholesale market! It is still the market where we get the products at the lowest price in the whole world. It was famous for its lowest price feature from old days and also it maintains this tag till date.
Things were so different at that time. The roads were so clear, the people dressed up differently. What a great difference fifty, sixty odd years make. Things have truly changed a lot since that. Thailand I would say has reinvented itself and is a whole new place now. I like it better as it was in the pictures, but locals may not agree with an American’s point of view though.
Getting the opportunity to view the old pictures makes me excited. I like to collect ancient pictures. I found your post useful for me. I have passion for doing research on the old customs and traditions of different countries and cities. I think this gives them the individuality. And also it makes them different from others. Thanks for posting such wonderful pictures and surely keep posting them!
Must say that you have taken a lot of trouble to upload these pictures and they are highly appreciated. Must say that the photographs are small, few of them and difficult to see too. Must say that these make me love Thailand all the more. It is a great place to visit and now looking at these pictures, it has great history too.
By looking at these pictures, it takes me to the old days of Thailand. Thai boxing picture has refreshed the memories of our Thailand visit long back. It is different from the other professional boxing. The picture also shows the interest of the Thai people during old days. The picture of Thai family is also unique. It is different from the usual pictures. It is rare to watch these pictures. Thanks for the post!
Thailand is a great place to visit for all those who like to live life on the edge. But I must say that these pictures made me stare again, to see if this was the same place that I visited recently about 80 odd years ago. Must say things were really different big time there. Great share, thanks for it.
