I just stumbled upon a great collection of old pictures from Vietnam.
Most are from the Colonial Area (circa 1900) when the country was still the French Indochina (and the Tonkin, since most of those pictures were taken in Hanoi). Some of them are colored by hand (in a very beautiful way i must say. You get the feeling they are real color pictures but they’re not).
So expect a few updates from these in the coming weeks. Let’s start today with some Opium Smokers.
As you may know, Opium was legal in the Colonial days.

Opium was a word I first heard in History where China and the opium market in Asia was studied when I was in school. There was a statement that I vaguely remember which says that people were addicted to it. These pictures seem to ratify the argument as the people in the picture seem very addicted to the drug. The colored pictures are sensational and no one will say that they are almost 100 years old.
Having tried opium as a youngster and now looking at these pictures, I must say that they are enjoying the taste, flavor and experience of the drug in a nice way. The pictures have used color and poise in a great way. I must say that these pictures seem very regal in a way. It was really nice to see them.

I have to add that of course opium is really bad for your health and you probably should not try it !
It may look and even sound cool to be smoking opium but its very hazardous to health. It is a substance that contains about 10 percent morphine, can be smoked as well as injected. Like heroin or morphine, it can create feelings of warmth, relaxation and sedation. Continued smoking of opium can have devastating results. Users can quickly become extremely addicted to heroin. They develop a tolerance and need to use higher, stronger and more dangerous doses to reach the same physical highs. Meanwhile, the brain becomes used to the continued presence of the drug and signals the body that it needs more.
